The one nice thing about being in the health insurance business - I don't need to prepare my elevator speech. The mere mention that I am in the dreaded health insurance world generally stops the listener from asking anything further about my career. Why is that the typical response?
Such a complicated industry. Take for example, what is the difference between health care and healthcare? According to Big Language Solutions - "Health care is the specific things people do: see a patient, and prescribe medication. Healthcare is an industry, the system by which people get the health care they need." So, is there a difference between healthcare and health insurance? By most definitions, health care is the field concerned with the maintenance or restoration of the body or mind health. Health insurance provides the channel to pay for expenses incurred through the delivery of health care.
Now imagine you need health care. Your employer has provided you with health insurance, so it should be easy to access health care, right? Well, maybe. First, you need to find the right provider and/or how best to enter the health care world - telehealth, general practitioner, specialist, emergency room, urgent care, hospital... Wait, now it's getting complicated.
It used to be "easy" - just make sure you go to an in-network provider. We didn't discuss cost or quality because it was assumed the networks had the top providers and negotiated the best price.
